The Mother of All Days

A whole day dedicated to Mothers everywhere. A whole day to spoil them rotten and show appreciation for all the bottoms they wipe, shopping bags they lug, tears they dry and the school uniform they fold. What a great idea.

Like many great ideas ('re-sealable' packets, inviting the whole class to a party, having a glass of wine before Parents' Evening) the reality doesn't always match up to the vision.

I do love my annual breakfast-in-bed, but most of it is usually spilt halfway up the stairs by a giggly pre-schooler tripping over their pjs. What remains is munched (not by me, obviously) until my bed is full of crumbs. The tea is cold, and someone has used a daffodil to stir it.

So, this year we've rooted out some gifts that should genuinely cheer up even the most exhausted of Mummies on Mother's Day.

I will be leaving the list open on my laptop in the hope something makes it onto that breakfast tray. Go on, do the same. You absolutely deserve it.

And here's to Mums, Dads and little breakfast-in-bed makers everywhere.

1.

Clever Steph at Dontbuyherflowers has created a whole host of hampers and gift packages that include treats from chocolates & gin to candles & handcream. All beautifully presented and delivered in a timely fashion.

2.

The gorgeous sweatshirts & tees from Selfishmother not only look & feel great, but also help others - £10 of each sale goes to charity. Lots of colour & design choice, and now available in good old John Lewis too.

3.

Nothing quite as sweet as a piece of porcelain painted with fat little hands and lots of love. Feel a huge decorated teapot could be good. These plates were painted at Sammy Duder which is a particularly special pottery cafe up in Clapham.

4.

If you want to make a Mum cry with laughter at the hilarity of parenthood this brilliant book by super blogger Katie Kirby is the answer. Buy in all good bookshops, and pore over the blog here: Hurrah for Gin

5.

A precious silver memento of the littlies' prints, in necklace, bracelet or key ring form, because we all know they are growing too fast. And you can get matching cufflinks for Daddy on Father's Day. Boom.

Of course, what Mums REALLY want is for their kids to play happily, together with their siblings and friends, and for the tidying up to be minimal. Enter Stuffel bags. No more tipped out boxes, just great Lego storage. Longer play and faster tidying = more time to choose your own Mothers' Day gifts for next year. Phew. Shop here!
